E.ON, a large power and gas company in the United Kingdom, is using a human process management (HPM) solution to track business-critical actions and control audit and compliance management. HPM solutions focus on the human side of business processes, such as gathering information, collaborating with others and making decisions.E.ON has deployed ActionBase human process management as part of its Action Tracking initiative. The strategy is to create an integrated business and centralized corporate knowledgebase, and to focus on business processes when dealing with compliance and regulations.ActionBase enables managers to initiate and engage in human business processes that are usually handled through documents, Microsoft Excel checklists and e-mail correspondence, ActionBase says of its solution.HPM provides managers with real-time status and visibility over the whole process, optimizing resources and enhancing communication and collaboration with reporting, alerting and syndication, the company explains. Furthermore, the system enables seamless integration with Microsoft Outlook, keeping users in their working environment.Dave Potter, technical governance manager for Generations Operation for E.ON in the United Kingdom, says, "We needed an off-the-shelf action tracking solution that supports a collaborative approach to corporate accountability and responsibility for achieving operational excellence. Working in a complex environment causes actions to come from many different cross-organizational processes such as operations and regulations, internal and external audit reviews, incident management, etc. Unlike other solutions, ActionBase's integration with Microsoft Office follows the audit trail on all assigned action items and creates a central repository for assigning, tracking and resolving all of our actions." Via KMWorld

ISYS Search Software has launched ISYS:web 9, the company's enterprise search solution for intranets, Web sites, Microsoft SharePoint and custom Web applications.ISYS:web 9 includes enhancements designed to deliver the speed, efficiency and accuracy required to find information fast. Further, says ISYS, its Intelligent Content Analysis feature identifies key characteristics about a content collection, such as metadata patterns and entities, and leverages these facets in the interface to provide a more fluid search and discovery process.Intelligent Content Analysis manifests itself in the form of several parametric search and refinement options, says the company. At index time, ISYS notes aspects like entities in the full text (e.g., names, locations); commonly recurring metadata values in semi-structured and database formats; location of files; dates and numbers; and position of words. These characteristics are then exploited, either as a front-end interface for parametric search or as refinement options within search results.ISYS:web 9's capabilities also include:Intelligent Query Expansion--gives users greater context and avenues to pursue, offers suggestions based on a query and the document (for example, a search for "SharePoint" might suggest "SharePoint search Web part");ContextCogs--snippets of relevant and contextual information pulled from third-party sources and displayed alongside standard ISYS results;Intelligence Clouds--enable rapid navigation of key information;Improved Performance and Scalability--ability to handle most search requests concurrently with a higher throughput;Search Form Customization--offers both automatic and designable search forms;Index Biasing--expands ISYS:web's tuning capabilities, provides administrators with the ability to adjust the weighting on entire collections of documents. That enables an organization to further tune relevance to suit specific use case scenarios.De-duplication--automatically identifies identical documents and either removes them from the results or visually marks them;ISYS:web Federator--allows customers to federate their searches across both ISYS and non-ISYS content sources. Exchange Indexing--enables administrators to centrally create and manage individual indexes for each user's e-mail account.Via KMWorld

Brad Hoyt, KM News editor, defines knowledge management as follows:

    1. Knowledge management is about connecting people to people and people to information to create competitive advantage.
    2. The intersection of these connections is where creativity spawns innovation and thus establishes competitive advantage. I refer to this as connectedness, and is accomplished through what I have come to call Community-based Knowledge Management.
    3. Knowledge or know-how, is contextual and ranges in form from codified or codifiable (explicit knowledge) to experiential (tacit knowledge).

Vital Path has unveiled PathBuilder Studio, which is designed to put control of unregulated content in the hands of the business user, thereby moving migration projects from the back office to the desktop. The company claims PathBuilder Studio allows corporations to easily migrate content from one or multiple sources into enterprise content management (ECM) repositories, a problem that, it adds, until now did not have an efficient, secure solution.PathBuilder Studio's vendor-neutral approach is designed to answer both one-to-one and many-to-one repository migrations. It allows business users to move content, calendars and tasks at the file, folder or repository level, retaining all associated metadata while using a familiar and intuitive graphical user interface. This approach not only speeds up the migration, it maximizes return on investment, says Vital Path.Via KMWorld
